"A key initiative for boosting new film projects in the Basque Country."

The fiction feature film Anochece, produced by ECPV Films, Marta Fresnillo, and Orbe Cinema, has been selected to take part in the fifth edition of the Apika Audiovisual Project Lab, a key initiative supporting the development of new film projects in the Basque Country. The film is one of six selected this year to receive professional mentoring and personalized guidance with the aim of reaching production.
Anochece
Bilbao under threat: a silent invasion creeps through the city.
Mysterious, deadly tendrils are spreading in the shadows, disrupting everyday life with no clear explanation. Amid the growing chaos, EVA (40), a veterinarian specialized in surgery, must fight for survival—not only against what lurks in the dark, but also against the overwhelming pressures of her own life: a mother suffering from Alzheimer’s, a rebellious teenage daughter, and a clinic filled with infected animals.
Starring Itziar Ituño, Andrea Fandos, and Petra Martínez, this gripping sci-fi thriller explores family bonds, protective instincts, and the fear of the unknown—all from the heart of a city slowly falling apart from within.
This latest edition of the lab has broken records with 27 project submissions, reinforcing its status as a flagship platform for audiovisual development in Euskadi. “Apika Lab has become a fundamental pillar for the development of the audiovisual sector in Euskadi, and although five years may seem short to assess its impact, 33% of the selected projects are either in production or have already wrapped,” said Apika president Maite Ruiz de Austri.
Alongside Anochece, the selected projects include Los hijos de Adán (CSC Films), Morroi (Mirokutana Koop Elk Txikia), Saria / Zarza (Orlok Films), Temblor (Gariza Films and Nocturna), and Utlandsk (Baleuko).
With this new group of selected works, the lab has now supported 30 projects since its launch in 2020. Several of these have already reached the filming stage or are in active development. These include Sacamantecas by David Pérez Sañudo, Gaua by Paul Urkijo, and Erresistenteak by Elhuyar, all of which have recently completed filming. Other projects such as Yerma (Gariza Films), Irailak 27 (Izaskun Arandia), El Rompeolas (Leire Vaz), Siglujjördur (Karrakela Films), and Lamiak (Punto y Aparte) are also progressing steadily.
