Study Film production in ECPV
What should you study to produce films and series?
Producing a film or series is not just about logistics: it’s about recognizing the potential of a story, knowing who to work with to develop it, and how to bring it to the audience. The producer is the central figure who connects the creative, technical, and financial aspects of an audiovisual project. If you're interested in cinema from the perspective of strategy, organization, and decision-making, production is your place.
At ECPV – Basque Country Film School, we offer you an intensive one-year master’s degree that prepares you with the skills and tools to handle the entire audiovisual production process. From development and funding to distribution, you will gain a comprehensive and realistic understanding of the profession, learning alongside working professionals through real projects.
"Producing is the art of making things happen, with the right people, at the right time, for the right reason." — David Puttnam
Why train as a producer?
The current audiovisual sector demands professionals capable of navigating both institutional and independent environments. A good producer not only understands funding and co-production models but also the artistic needs of a project and how to make decisions that directly influence its success.
This master’s program will not only train you in theoretical and technical aspects but also give you the opportunity to apply everything you’ve learned by developing a real project in collaboration with other departments such as scriptwriting and directing.
What will you learn in the master’s program?
- Public, private, and international funding models.
- National and European co-production, and current regulations.
- Dramaturgy and script analysis from the producer’s point of view.
- Production planning: budgets, crews, shooting, and postproduction.
- Audiovisual law and tax incentives.
- Distribution, marketing, and international sales.
- Practical feature film development lab (LAB).
Hands-on training connected to the industry
Throughout the course, you will develop your own project that could become a real production. You will participate in specialized masterclasses, collaborate with the directing and script departments, and gain first-hand experience of how production works in contexts such as platforms, festivals, or European co-productions.
You will also have active tutors and lecturers: producers, distributors, development consultants, and experts in law and funding, many of whom are behind award-winning projects at festivals like Cannes or have been nominated for the Goya and Oscar awards.
What career paths does this master’s offer?
Upon completion, you’ll be ready to work in any phase of film, series, or documentary production. Some possible career paths include:
- Executive producer.
- Head of production or production assistant.
- Project development manager.
- Co-production or international funding coordinator.
- Distribution and sales.
You will also have gained the foundation to launch your own audiovisual project and start creating with a strategic, artistic, and professional vision.
If you have a story worth telling, or want to be the person who helps bring other stories to the screen, this master’s may be the push you’ve been waiting for.
