The Basque filmmaker embraces emerging talent in his new fantasy production

Basque director Paul Urkijo Alijo, known for his passion for fantasy cinema and his success with Errementari, returns with Gaua, his latest film. Produced by Irusoin, the movie will feature several alumni from the Basque Country Film School (ECPV) in its production team.
Among the notable names involved in the project are Jon Solana, Sendoa Elejalde, Aritza Munárriz, and Leo La Fuente, all contributing their talent and expertise to Urkijo’s new cinematic endeavor.

Born in Vitoria-Gasteiz in 1984, Urkijo has always been fascinated by cinema, illustration, and mythology—an influence that deeply shapes his filmmaking.
The cast of Gaua is led by Yune Nogueiras (La infiltrada, Akelarre), who stars alongside Ane Gabarain (20.000 especies de abejas, Patria), Elena Irureta (atria, Flores de otro mundo), and Iñake Irastorza (Ventajas de viajar en tren, Todos estamos invitados).
The ensemble is rounded out by Xabi Jabato (Sin cobertura, Valle salvaje), Erika Olaizola (TLos últimos románticos, Los tontos y los estúpidos), Manex Fuchs (20.000 especies de abejas), and Elena Uriz (Akelarre, Irati), among others.
The story of Gaua takes us to the Basque mountains in the 17th century, during the height of the witch hunts. Kattalin flees from her husband in the dead of night, venturing into the darkness of the forest, where she senses a mysterious presence following her. Along the way, she encounters three kind-hearted women who, while washing clothes, share eerie tales and local gossip. To Kattalin’s astonishment, she will soon find herself becoming part of those very stories.
With a mix of emerging talent and experienced professionals, Gaua promises to immerse the audience in a new tale of fantasy and mystery, marked by the unmistakable signature of Paul Urkijo.
