This coming Friday, November 14th, GAUA, the highly anticipated new feature film by Paul Urkijo, premieres in commercial theaters. The director, who made a mark on Basque cinema with his acclaimed debut Errementari, takes us on a dark journey to the 17th century during the witch hunts, set among the forests and mountains of the Basque Country.
GAUA tells the story of Kattalin, masterfully portrayed by Yune Nogueiras, a woman fleeing her husband who leaves the farmhouse in the middle of the night and becomes lost in the darkness of the woods. There, pursued by a haunting presence, she encounters three mysterious women washing clothes by the river, sharing scary stories and village gossip. To her surprise, Kattalin will become part of those very same legends and fears.
A stellar cast and a cinematic akelarre
Described by many as a true cinematic akelarre (witches’ gathering), the film also features a strong cast including Elena Irureta, Ane Gabarain, Iñake Irastorza, Xabi Jabato López, Erika Olaizola, Manex Fuchs, and Elena Uriz, among others.
Early screenings at festivals have earned the film rave reviews from both audiences and critics alike. In a recent interview, Urkijo shared that his only pressure is that people enjoy GAUA and come to see it in theaters.
Local talent from the Basque Film School (ECPV)
A notable highlight is the collaboration with the Basque Film School (ECPV), as several alumni contribute their skills to the production team. Talented young professionals like Jon Solana, Sendoa Elejalde, Aritza Munárriz, and Leo La Fuente bring their expertise and dedication to this project, which promises not only to captivate but also to strengthen Basque cinema on the big screen.
